Similar format to JAPN 1000-2000 level classes. Sato sensei is readily available outside of class and responds quickly to e-mails concerning homework / assignments. Good thing about this class is that there are no projects like there were in the lower Japanese levels. However, be prepared to invest a lot of time in every day homework (massive amount of kanji), writing, or reading exercises. Tests are fair: if you pay attention in class and take your time on assignments, you will be well prepared. Unlike the lower Japanese level classes, class exams have both an in-class (kanji, grammar, and reading) and take-home portion (reading and writing).
IMPORTANT: Make sure to save your copies of quizzes / tests / homework, as well as make note of any absences that you had from class. The grading in this class is not transparent at all. Saving your old assignments will assist you in the event that you have concerns about your grades, and knowing when your were absent + why you were could help you if your participation grade is lower than you thought it was.
If you take this class, DO NOT MAKE ANY PLANS TO SKIP. Your grade will drop tremendously (participation is 40% of your grade), and the senseis do not entertain excuses for absences (unless you are super sick / family emergency and have documents confirming such events). On that note, if you have the common cold it would be in your best interest to go to class and sit through it. Also, make sure to participate and appear attentive during class. Not only does will it help you practice your conversation skills, it is necessary to have a good grade. I know some of my peers did great on their lesson exams, but didn't get as high as a grade in the course as they thought they deserved because their in-class participation was lacking.
