Marshall sensei is sincerely the sweetest, most caring, most knowledgeable teacher you may ever encounter in the language department. She really cares about her students and puts an incredible amount of work into this course; she will also do everything possible to help you succeed. Nonetheless, this class is A LOT of work and you will have to dedicate 5-6 hours each week just finishing homework, let alone studying. But you will learn so much Japanese and most importantly how to use it in a real world context. Totally worth!!
Holy moly was this class a lot of work, but it was also fun and rewarding. The classes are pretty small, so you get to know people pretty well and that's a plus if you like getting to know people. Plus I find that most people have the same interests. Marshall sensei wants her students to learn a lot, and as a result pushes you to use eeeeevveeerrything you know even though it can be hard. This was no doubt a class with constant work, but if you want to get better at Japanese, you will be able to learn and apply the language much better if you put the time and effort into it.
This course is very intense and requires a good deal of effort, but as long as you don't get behind it is doable. You will be amazed at your ability to acquire Japanese! Marshall sensei is an awesome teacher and is very helpful, though sometimes intimidating. She really wants her students to learn Japanese and will give you the tools for success in her class. If you follow her advice and spend adequate time on the assignments you can meet her expectations. The class is very conversationally based but it is not entirely conducted in Japanese, the grammar is still discussed in English. Take Japanese!!!!
This class is tough, but you are guaranteed to learn the Japanese language. There are 4 quizzes every two weeks and a test every 4 weeks. This class meets every weekday and has homework due every day as well. This class will can make the difference between an easy and hard semester. I love the class, but the workload is constant and there is no escape, but it is necessary to get better at the language. Tomoko Marshall is one of the best foreign language teachers I have seen, but it is because she does not go easy on her students
