"Coulter George is not for the faint of heart."
- Dr JAM, I think
I came into this course with plenty of Latin experience but had little in the way of the "unlisted prerequisites" that would have been helpful (Greek, German, any linguistics class); however, from what I judge based on statements from students who did have some of these going in, this class is a beast regardless. Dr George is a brilliant academic who is extremely knowledgeable in his subject area and who has an exacting approach to dissecting arguments of both authors and of his own students. Add to that a heavy amount of reading for every class and a high quantity of highly academic content, and you've got a very challenging class. The biggest saving grace was that for the quizzes, Dr George would release a short list of potential questions to prepare for, so you were never going in blind. He did something similar for the final but wasn't as specific as to what the questions would be. If it weren't for this formatting, I'm not sure how I would have kept up with this class, especially since there was more discussion than lecture, making it hard to know what to take notes on. However, for as difficult as this class was, and for all the things I never absorbed, what I did learn has been extremely enlightening and I am optimistic that it will continue to provide me with a deeper perspective for reading Latin.
