This Chinese culture class was superrrr fun and easy! By far the best class I’ve taken at UVA with minimal work, and it didn’t even feel like I was taking a class but at the same time I truly learned so much. We got to experience different parts of Chinese culture such as practicing calligraphy, learning go (the game), wushu, Chinese painting, how to play the guqin (a Classical Chinese instrument) and we even got to cook Chinese dishes. Professor Wang was also super nice and sweet and accommodating. Her office hours were always available if we wanted to keep practicing the things we learned in class. At the end of the semester there was a small showcase where people could come to the different stations and we taught them about our assigned topic such as how to play go. I don’t think it’s possible to get less than an A in this class (unless you for some reason never show up to class - and as a chronic class skipper, trust me this is not a class you will want to miss). An amazing class taught by an amazing teacher. If this class is offered again it is a MUST take.
I would definitely recommend this class for anyone who's interested in Chinese Culture or just wants a fun and engaging class to take!! Most students had Chinese/Taiwanese background but the class is open for everyone. Grades were:
20% - Pre-Class Preparation Assignments
20% - Class Participation
10% - In-Class Mini Quizzes
20% - Post-Class Review and Practice Assignments
15% - Post-Unit Quizzes
15% - Final Project
There were 7 units and for the final project you picked one of the units to showcase. Some parts of the class felt a bit unorganized at times, but it was the first time the course was taught. There would usually be a video or a reading to prepare for each class, then during class there would be some lecture and hands-on activities for each unit. Office hours were always open for students who wanted more time to experience the different cultural practices. We were encouraged to share our personal thoughts and reflections from what we learned and also make connections between ancient Chinese Culture and the modern world.
