Straightforward class, pretty easy. The professor is interesting and very clear, but goes very quickly and her lectures are not on the powerpoints, so pay attention! Reading was not overwhelming and it's not a huge deal if you don't complete all of it every week. Only 2 essays and a take home final, with 10 reading responses that aren't graded throughout the semester. Worthwhile class if you're looking for an elective in either History or Women and Gender Studies!
Loved, loved, loved this course so much. Prof Field really makes the topic engaging and interesting, and the class is centered around reading primary documents, so you get a firsthand glimpse of a side of American history that is often overlooked. Prof Field also really wants to see you succeed, and is so kind and patient and understanding while teaching. She expects the best from you, but she will also put in the work to help you succeed. You'll come out the other side a better writer, historian, and student. I absolutely can't recommend this class enough.
This class is amazing. I am not a history buff, nor have I ever done amazing in history classes, but the structure of this class is set up for you to succeed. You spend the whole semester reading primary sources, and while they can be daunting, the time spent on in-class discussion definitely helps. Prof. Field is very understanding and always willing to help. She doesn't expect grand revelations about history and just wants you to contribute your thoughts because participation is a MUST. The readings can be long but most are enjoyable and the work is never overbearing. Weekly writing assignments and a final paper is most of the work you do. Coming from a STEM major, I seriously recommend this class and professor. I learned great skills, got out of my bubble a bit, and really enjoyed having Field as a professor.
