Came back to review this class because I am appalled no one has reviewed it so far. This is absolutely one of my favorite classes I've ever taken at UVA. Not only is Professor Mohamed EXTREMELY qualified and intelligent (her many stories about her Rhodes Scholarship and time at Harvard are just the icing on the cake. she is truly just that smart), but she is INCREDIBLY kind, loving, and supportive. I feel like every time I went to this class, I learned more about the world around me and it has stuck with me even two years afterwards. Even if you aren't interested in education, take this class. It defines education in a broad way, which helped me actually expand my opinion of education and things such as ISIS, statues, college curriculum, AI, propaganda, and more. I loved this class and you need to take it.
Prof Mohamed is amazing. She's super supportive of the students and our interests. The course does have quite a bit of reading, and she has admitted that the workload is more similar to a graduate level course, which makes sense as there are quite a few graduate students also taking the class. It's mostly lecture and readings, which are almost all incredibly fascinating. Every week, there is a discussion post about the readings and you have to reply to one of your classmates, and there is a second discussion that you have to add something tangentially related to the topic of the week. However, she is relatively okay with late work. We also had two guest speakers, which was very interesting. There is a final paper which is very broad, but allows students to develop their individual interests further. I do not recommend leaving it to the last minute because I ended up rushing it. There is a small presentation on the topic as well. She is very nice though, and very understanding. She gives great advice, and is wiling to help in the development of the paper as well. There's opportunity for feedback before and after the draft, and it is evident that she doesn't want anyone to fail. The topics you learn about are all super interesting; it really made me change the way I thought about the epistenes our education is built upon.
Great professor! Her lectures are super interesting and you truly learn so so much. I will always remember writing my education in conflict paper. She pushed us to find real people and I interviewed 4 people who actually escaped conflict zones. Such a cool experience. My paper ended up being pretty good. I don't remember if there was anything outside of class (I took the class two years ago) but it was pretty light in terms of work. Just start early and communicate with her. Her stories are so cool and I still bring them up to my friends. She's a very sweet professor. Sometimes the classes get a bit theoretical and It becomes hard to tie all the concepts together. But this class really shines far more with her captivating stories and the experiences we read about in class.
