Incredibly interesting course, I took AP Psych in High school and found that I enjoyed this class a lot more because it sought to apply concepts I had already learned by way of examining empirical articles and experiments that often established causality between things that I would not have ever considered. Scholer taught me a lot of really cool information and condensed important concepts underlying behavioral science into lectures and occasional small-group discussions (2 per semester). With that being said, I took issue with the harsh grading utilized by professor Scholer, in that she seems to not believe in the principle of giving out full points unless the work was "unusually" exceptional. I don't agree with that, and her rubrics essentially punish people for doing well (ie, a score of 80-89 would constitute "A very strong essay that ties the description of the social psychology concept to its application to current events in a clear, concise manner. Application is creative and thoughtful"). I ended with an A- in this course, which I am less than pleased with. As 2000 level social psychology course, I believe the focus should be on teaching students how to interpret and make meaning out of lengthy empirical articles and teaching us how to exercise that knowledge. All of that was done individually in this course, which made it difficult for us to grow as students, especially for me, because I struggle with straight up memorization.
This class is a double-edged sword: super interesting, but also super difficult. Grades are made up of 60% tests, 20% final paper, and 20% projects. Studying for the tests requires a lot of memorization, so if you don't like flashcards or Quizlet, this class might not be for you. Attending the lectures is super important, the slides she posts on Canvas aren't much help without her explanation. Doing the readings is also really important, she doesn't go over every reading in class or explain every detail. I ended with an A-, which I'm happy with.
Professor Scholer is a really nice, fair, knowledgable professor who tries her best to engage students. This is my 1st semester of college and I have a B- in this course, which I'm not thrilled with but I thought it was a personal issue. Reading the other reviews of this course honestly surprised me. I barely went to class (no attendance or participation grade). There are barely any real assignments; no homework or in-class work to hand in. There are just two 1.5 page essays, a big paper at the end of the semester + readings you're supposed to do before every class but I never did and I was always fine. Exams are annoying though, because there's so much content and very minor topics they include. TAs are nice but really picky graders. I say take it. I put in minimum effort and still did ok. It's really chill and interesting
This class is a lot of work if you are not good at memorizing things. It is less about application, and more about knowing studies and concepts. Personally, memorization is difficult for me, and I have found this course quite challenging; however, if you are good at memorizing information then you will be fine. With that in mind, I spend a lot of time studying and am still below average in the class. The professor is very nice and clearly cares about her students, but this is a challenging course. There will be information on tests based off of readings that she does not go over, and overall there is just a lot of information to know. GO to office hours and extra help! The TAs are great.
This is not a bad class if you try. The readings are dense, and she doesn't cover them in class, but they are on the tests. The class moves quickly, and there are no discussion questions, so it's up to you to understand the material. It's a doable class if you put in what you want to get out. Currently have an A. Professor Scholer is excellent and clearly cares for her students. The TAs are helpful as well and hold extra office hours before the exam. It's an enjoyable class if you enjoy critical thinking and psychological concepts. Everyone complaining about this class is lazy and doesn't want to put in the work because it takes a significant amount of work.
This class singlehandedly turned me away from going for Batten... Scholer's course was overall ridiculous and unnecessary. This is not a behavioral science course- it's a glorified experimental design and study hellscape. Long experiment papers were assigned weekly with practically no guidance on how to pull actual important information from them; these readings weren't covered in lecture (which was boring and unhelpful). The exams were unreasonably difficult for a 2000 level course and I personally felt as if I learned nothing the whole semester. Genuinely, going to lecture was unnecessary because lecture did not prepare you for any graded assignments. While Scholer was nice, her expectations were pretty unreasonable for a foundational course (especially under the assumption that you take any other difficult courses at the same time). I say all of this knowing I regularly scored on the higher end of the grade distribution, while this class still dropped my GPA significantly. Frankly, this course is not worth it. Take PSYC 2600 if you have any amount of self-love.
I think this class was hard but it was also very doable. The readings were difficult but as the semester went on she started to go over them in class which was very helpful. I thought the tests were fair and representative of the content we went over in class, it was just important to be very well versed in it. If you do the readings and go over the material learned in class you’ll be fine. Professor Scholer and the TAs are there to help you and I think they all did a good job overall. The lectures were enjoyable and I really enjoyed her teaching style. You’ll have to put in some work but I actually liked this class and took a lot away from it.
if you plan on doing the batten major/minor, do yourself a favor and take psyc 2600 instead of this course. scholer assigns multiple difficult readings before each class period. she does not go over them, but they are on the exams. the exams are also entirely unrelated to the class content. her lectures are elementary while the exams are way too difficult for a 2000 level course. she treats her class like it’s at the 4000 level. her grading is also incredibly difficult. she is so stingy with points for absolutely no reason. this class is tanking my gpa. also, my ta was cristin, and she was pretty helpful, so if you are unfortunate enough to take this course i recommend her.
