Summary: Wow. Just wow. I will never view politics the same!
Mr. Coppock is probably the best professor at UVA. I don't know if he's this good in 2010 (didn't take), but in Public Choice, he's super charismatic, passionate, funny, but also creates a serious tone where all the students respect him and, for many of us, look up to him. At first, I wasn't sure about Mr. Coppock, he often seemed pretentious. But he plays tough guy in the beginning of the semester, and he won me over.
Public Choice is a super interesting field of economics. How can we interpret our political system through an economics lens? If you have an interest in politics, this class is for you, you'll view the world differently.
If you're an economics major who's bored of tedious first order conditions and optimality conditions, this class could be for you. The class consists of readings which usually took me 1h 15m (slow reader over here). You're responsible for some blog posts, which should be free points. The exams won't test your knowledge on every single lecture or reading, but they are super fair and straight forward.
One last perk: this is a small class with the best and brighter economics majors. No bums, just ballers!
Amazing class! Small seminar full of the top 10% of the major. Readings were long, and you must do them since Professor Coppock calls on people in every class. The material is super interesting, and no math was involved. Tests are hard and ask you to apply the main ideas from the reading in ways you probably haven't seen before. Study your notes over and over and go to office hours earlier on! Don't try to re-read everything unless you really did not understand it the first time. Professor Coppock expects a lot from you, but if you survive this class, he will become your biggest advocate for the rest of your UVA experience. Fully recommend taking this class if you can/are interested!
