Barnetts lectures are in depth and sometimes hard to follow because he uses a lot of sanskrit words. The take home midterms and finals take forever and are graded somewhat arbitrarily because of the size of the class. People take a lot of notes, reading is optional till midterms/finals. Not hard to get a B+, hard to get A- to A.
Barnett talks extremely fast and uses tons of Sanskrit words, making it very hard to take notes during class. The good thing is 20% of your grade is drawing a map which is fairly simple, and the other 80% is a take-home midterm and final. With enough effort on those it isn't too difficult of a class.
While Barnett was amusing, he did not do a good job telling the story of the history. This might have been because of the incredible lack of information about this period of Indian history. Much of the class seemed to be just figuring out which Sanskrit word he had referred to on the vocab list and giving it a brief definition. I did well on the first test, it was easy, but somehow when I applied the same effort to the similar final my grade dropped to a B+. The best part of the class was reading the hilariously ultra left wing quotes Professor Barnett cycled at the bottom of each email he sent out.
Barnett is a hilarious teacher, and makes the material interesting, but he takes SO long to return the midterms and finals. It took him at least a month to grade all the midterms, and then forgot to bring them in for at least 4 classes.
Who knows when we'll get our final grades, I don't expect to get them until at least 2011.
