While I really like Professor Moomaw as a person, this class was incredibly boring. I do not feel like I gained anything from taking this course. Nothing presented in this course was "new news." I think anyone who keeps up with the news and knows a little bit of history would not be surprised by anything touched on in this class. If you are looking for an easy A class, then this will do it. There are two take-home, essay-based exams that are very easy to do well on if you study specific things to pull from the readings. Moomaw wants to see you did the readings and know how to incorporate the author's thoughts into your own writing. There are two papers, one individual and one group. The individual paper is on the neighborhood you're from - it is very easy, just make sure you reference the reading a lot. The group paper was not my favorite because everyone has a different writing style which makes it hard for the paper to sound cohesive. Luckily, you get an individual and group grade for the group paper, so one person cannot tank the whole group. You have to go to lecture because attendance is a good portion of your grade. If you are not an urban planning major who is required to take this class, I would think about the type of class you want. If you want something easy, but boring, then this is a good option. If you are looking for something interesting, I would look elsewhere.
