I absolutely loved this class. I have been wanting to learn Hindi for a while now and I am so glad that I was able to take this class. Nasir Ji is absolutely the best professor I have had at this university. He is so sweet and really cares about the wellbeing and success of his students. He wants us to be engaged and is so helpful. He gives dad vibes and he is just such an amazing person and teacher in general. Learning a language is really hard, especially at UVA, but Nasir Ji made it so easy. This class meets 4 days a week and there is usually homework every day and quizzes almost every week. It isn't much work though and it isn't that hard because having a good professor really helps. I came in knowing nothing but there were people in the class that came into the class with a little Hindi knowledge already. Regardless of how much you know or don't know, you will end up learning a lot through this class. Overall, I highly recommend! Nasir Ji is awesome, the class structure is good and it is not super difficult to get an A in the class. If you are really interested in learning how to speak, read, and write Hindi, this is the class for you. TAKE THIS CLASS!!! you will love it and learn so much from it.

Just take it. Nasir Ji is an amazing teacher and really cares about each student. Grading is also very self explanatory and has so many opportunities to make up for a bad grade. If you are even vaguely interested in learning Hindi take this class to dip your toes in. I would not personally call this an Hindi AND Urdu class as the Urdu component starts in the second semester but it is a well taught class. Grading is also far less stressful than other language departments at UVA. 10/10!!
This was an awesome course. Nasir Ji is without a doubt one of UVA's best teachers. It was a good amount of daily work, but gave a great introduction to the language and hooked me to keep learning. Accessible to people with zero previous Hindi experience. Would highly recommend as a good language course for anyone who's looking to start a new language. #tCFfall22
Because this class is every day and pretty small (although on Fridays you don't come to class and watch bollywood movies instead), you learn a ton really fast. I had limited experience coming in and was having (admittedly broken) conversations with my grandmother by the end! It's a fun class, and while you learn a lot it isn't too demanding. As someone who had barely any knowledge of Hindi before taking the class (My parents don't speak it or anything), I could definitely tell that the people who grew up hearing Hindi/Urdu learned a little faster and already had a vocabulary base, but the class was definitely approachable for a beginner and I never felt like I was behind just because I hadn't heard it at home. As for the professor, Nasir ji is super nice and helpful. Grammar is definitely emphasized in the course, but you also spend a lot of time practicing speaking with classmates. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a unique language to learn to fulfill their language requirement or anyone just interested in South Asia and South Asian culture.
Nasir Ji is the absolute GOAT. He is the nicest professor at UVA and genuinely cares about his students. He is also a great teacher and is always willing to help his students succeed. This coming from someone with no prior Hindi experience. Grading is quite fair, and at some points rather generous (I think the average GPA for our class was around a 3.7-3.8). 10/10 would recommend taking all Hindi classes with him!
