Professor Ribic is incredibly passionate about her research and Neuroscience in general, and she makes a lot of jokes. Yet despite this, Hidden Figures was one of the worst classes I have taken at UVA thus far. The class is self-graded, and you only have 2 checkpoints (exams) throughout the semester with a final project at the end. Professor Ribic makes her checkpoints virtually impossible to get good grades on, and she only considers her knowledge to be right. She assigns a textbook that isnt required to read, but her checkpoint answers are solely based on her lecture. If the book or another professor says otherwise, they are wrong and she is right. Her lectures have no words on them so you HAVE to attend class to do well and you can't use the slides to study because they only contain 1 figure per slide. Additionally, she is not understanding about question regrades compared to other psych teachers, and she is incredibly condescending. Overall, to get a good grade you have to do well on her checkpoints, attend AND participate in class (ask and answer questions), ask questions during the class speakers, and work well with your pod. Easy A in theory, but I did not find this class enjoyable or easy.
I really enjoyed the material of this class and loved professor Ribic. She is definitely super intelligent, so it can be kind of hard to keep up with her during lectures sometimes, but she is very helpful, accommodating and nice. She allowed the students in my class to choose our own grade at the end of the semester based on how well we feel like we performed. She meets with you about your grade and either agrees or disagrees with the grade you chose. Overall, is you study the material, try your best on checkpoints, participate in class and work well with your group you can get a good grade.
