Braun is so much fun. I'm not a morning person, but he brightens the room with his enthusiasm so it's worth coming to class. He also takes attendance, so it's a good idea to do that. The books are for the most part very interesting. I recommend this enthusiastically for anyone who wants to learn a bit about Latin America.
This is a great class. I don't agree with the person below...obviously this is NOT your first class about Latin America so you will obviously have a general idea about Latin America before coming into the class. The choice of books is great!! This class was NO work except a journal, which you do in class and a 20 page paper which I thought was a lot but you literally sit the day before and you write it all and it just comes out!! Take him!
Tico envisions this class as being groundbreaking and different from all other history classes, but what it ends up being is him expressing his opinions without having readings that give any historical facts to support it. Most of them are sociological essays, and so if you disagree with him you don't have any evidence to support your argument which will lead to a mediocre grade. He favors students over others and his grading can be subjective. That being said, if you don't mind catering to a teacher's views and doing all of the abstract writings, then its not hard to get a good grade.
Tico is great! He is funny and entertaining. It is actually fun to go to class as long as you can get past the early morning start time. No midterm or final. Just a journal and one 20 page paper. The readings are generally interesting and include both fiction and non-fiction but there are a lot of them.
