This class was actually the most fun class I took this semester. You get an extremely hands-on approach as to how construction projects are acquired, planned, and managed. There are a lot of guest speakers, and there is also an additional construction site tour (provided there is one on grounds). Overall, the class gave a great overview into the CEM track.
For the course setup, you would usually take notes every day you would have lecture. Note, take very careful notes, especially about what the professor and guest speakers say specifically. You can always go back to the slides, but she often likes to test you on general things guest speakers talked about. Then, every week you usually get an A HW assignment and a B homework assignment, where A assignments were more in depth and based on her lectures (and always individual), and B assignments were usually group projects based on the guest speakers topics.
The assignments were sometimes pretty tricky, and furthermore tou may have to wait for a lecture or 2 before you could fully complete the assignment. The TA's were helpful, however they were not always reliable with being there on time.
The course has a midterm and a final (non cumulative). While the midterm I found to be super easy, the final was a bit tougher. There is a bit of simple but tedious math in this course, and you tap into that moreso in the second half of the course.
As foe the professor specifically, I couldn't have a better recommendation. She was absolutely wonderful to work with, and she has so many opportunities for CEM students to explore their fields and get involved with Civil Engineering at UVA. While her lecture style can be fast, the slides are basic enough that as long as you read over them you should be good.
Hands down one of the best professors ever, and I am sure you are going to love this class as long as you put in thr work and show the interest!
