This was an interesting course, but it's not for everyone. Professor Geraci can have a monotone at times, and a few of the political documents are dull. That said, there is a good balance within the readings between necessary textbook and document readings and more interesting literature (novels, plays, memoirs) of the period.
Worst class I took at UVA by far. Definetly do not take it. You have 2 separate take home midterms, a paper, a final, and basically constantly have work. Also, the professor is very boring along with the class material. The grading is very hard, expect to work the hardest you have ever for a 200 level class.
This class wasn't very good. Professor Geraci is kind of boring, but Nir Avissar, my TA was amazing. He's the best discussion leader I've had and I'm taking the class he is TAing next semester just to have him again. Although the subject is dry and theres a ton of reading, Nir makes everything easy to understand and he is a relatively easy grader. Also be ready for quizzes, almost all of them came at the end of the semester, which is Geraci's specialty and he clearly enjoys lecturing about far more than the early 18th century material.
This is the worst class I've taken at UVa. It was unreasonably hard, and incredibly boring. Lecture made it hard to stay awake, and discussion was like nails on a chalkboard. They expected an absurd amount of reading every week- a novel and textbook reading each week for a 2000 level class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
A lot of negative reviews on here so I just wanted to say I actually enjoyed this class. He isn't a great lecturer but the material is really interesting and and he knows his stuff. I also never completed all the reading each week, which was a lot, but still got an A just from paying attention in lecture and studying my notes. It's a very interesting subject and the relatively small class size facilitates asking questions mid-lecture, which is pretty helpful.
The information is cool, but that is the only thing that is good about this class. He is not a good lecturer, and his lectures are not fun. His readings are all ridiculous, because they are superfluous and do not pertain to what we are learning about in class. He takes a long time to grade things. Lecture is torture. He jumps around all the time and often does not cover everything on his slides. AVOID. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
