Professor Kershaw is extremely intelligent and fun, though sometimes demanding, which makes students work hard in class. It's a fairly challenging course, but it is immensely interesting. There is a lot of reading, anywhere from 50 to 150 pages a week depending on the current subject matter, but most of it is very compelling and easy to get through within an hour or two. The class size is fairly small, so Kershaw expects a lot of participation (it is 40% of the grade), so many of the students take it upon themselves to talk about the readings and the class really feels like a seminar. This isn't a class where the professor will stand there and lecture at you, instead Kershaw listens to what you say and then writes down student ideas on the board as the discussion goes along. I highly recommend this course to anyone with a love for history or any interest in the subject matter.
