This class was such a treat. Prof. Dimberg is very passionate about Korean history and it shows all his lectures. Definitely read the assigned readings because it helps on the quizzes and most definitely on the essays. Don't postpone working on the essays and it's a good idea to go to his office hours and talk to him about your essay...it really helps!
I would not recommend this class. It's somewhat interesting, but I was disappointed with the fact that the previous reviews that I've read have stated that he is a very fair grader; this is not entirely true, and he even mentioned in class that he graded rather harshly simply because he was in a bad mood that day. It is also a very dense class, and I would recommend one of the Chinese classes instead, if you are looking to fulfill an asian history requirement.
The readings aren't necessary for the lectures; Dimberg's informative enough that as long as you pay attention in class and take very good notes [verbatim if you can, he reiterates and speaks slowly enough to do so], then you can get by rather easily. The books are good for personal interest, clarification if you need it, and citations for the take home exams [essays].
There are two essays and a quiz for the midterm, same for the final - very doable. I will admit that Dimberg's a fickle grader for the essays, though, so if you want to avoid moody grading then submit your essays a bit early or something. And it's possible that he might overlook something on the in-class quizzes as well; either way, you can go to office hours and talk to him about it. He seems like he'd be pretty flexible.
Great class if you have an interest in Korean history - Dimberg really knows his stuff - and good if you're just there to fulfill a requirement.
Dimberg is a fantastic lecturer. He really makes the material interesting and tries to slow down class sometimes with some of his own personal stories. 2 quizzes identifying significance of 10 terms and 2 papers. For the papers just be creative, I would always recommend writing on the open ended essay topic, and make sure you bounce your thesis off Dimberg. If you go to him to work out the kinks in your thesis he will be much more lenient when grading. As much as I hate to say it he is subjective in grading: he definitely plays favorites, but if you go to his office hours and he comes to recognize you, then you will do fine.
