I love Elizabeth Fowler! Her class was always like a breath of fresh air for me within the rest of my schedule. The workload was very manageable - just 4 short quizzes (she drops your lowest grade), 4 annotations of a passage (again, she drops your lowest), and one 6 page literary essay or creative project. She's one of the warmest and most supportive faculty here at UVA and her feedback on my work was always so constructive and kind. Our class discussions about the readings were always really interesting and even fun - I recommend always doing the reading before class because they're not too difficult and you get a lot more out of discussions that way. Couldn't recommend her more!
Took Malory's King Arthur with Fowler. She is super awesome and really cares about her students. There were reading quizzes every few weeks, but they were online and half open book. We also had two papers or projects where you could pick which one to do. If I were to go back, I would have done two projects because they are more fun and just require a short reflection. If you need anything you can always reach out to her, and she is super understanding. The readings were difficult at first and sometimes a bit repetitive/boring, but we talked about interesting things in class which made up for that. The class will definitely get you more comfortable with medieval lit. She wants you to participate in class, but a ton of kids never did and had their cameras off. I imagine it would have been better in person (as everything is), but it was great for being online. Overall, I would definitely recommend!
