Professor Miller is a wonderful man. He definitely knows his stuff, but it is sometimes hard to understand the exact point of what he is saying. This class challenges to start thinking from an African perspective, which really makes you think. This being said, you have to write a take-home-point (THP) every class, there are map quizzes every week, a few 2-page papers (which aren't bad) and one 5-page paper (in place of a final). Nice professor, but has a particular "thing" he is looking for in all of his assignments. Work hard, and you'll pass with flying colors. Biggest tip: Do the readings and go to discussion.
Definitely take this class, especially if you are trying to knock out your historical studies and nonwestern perspectives credits, it's an interesting class with a fair amount of reading but not all of it is necessary. Sometimes lecture can be boring because Miller goes off on tangents that don't seem to be relevant, but he has so much experience and is usually very interesting.
Ben Davison was an awesome TA
Also because of the way the class works you get a lot of helpful critiques on your writing, which pays off in the long run.
I would recommend this class to anyone, really worthwhile, and I got a B+
