Professor is good, but the class is quite difficult in my opinion. You need to make sure that both your abstract algebra and linear algebra is fresh. I struggled as I had to relearn a lot of the linear algebra and more abstract algebra than covered in 3354 while also learning this material.
If you're interested in information theory, its much better than any cs offering.
This is a very interesting class for those interested in Information Theory and the ideas surrounding optimizing data transmission. However, be warned, this is a very challenging class, especially if you are not familiar with rigorous proofs. It is not as challenging as some others in the MATH department (Intro Real, Stochastic, etc.) but it is certainly not an easy A. I think Ershov is a great prof, even if he is a bit rambly at times, as he tries his best to explain things well and always looks for active class engagement. The problem sets are very difficult but Ershov encourages collaboration, and I would also strongly encourage it. Do not take this class if you have not taken Survey of Algebra or are not willing to learn the material in a fairly short amount of time, and you definitely cannot take this class without at least some Linear Algebra experience
