Professor Levenson is an amazing lecturer and an overall interesting person. This class is pretty heavy on the readings during certain points of the semester, so be prepared to read a book within a week or less for class. I would say the structure of the class is somewhat organized, but there were sections of the semester where I was somewhat confused with how different readings applied to each other. Luckily, the readings are quite interesting, but be prepared to read a lot.
Levenson is a great lecturer and deep thinker. The class is built around reading global literature and discussing it. The grade will come very easily, so focus on enjoying the class and getting as much out of it as you can. The exams and assignments are easy. The subjects discussed are not! Reading can become a bit much at times, although if it gets that bad you can always get by just skimming and participating a little in class. Levenson is a must-take prof at UVA.
I didnt know what this class would be when I joined it - I honestly just needed to fulfill a major requirement and had heard plenty of good things about Professor Levenson. Needless to say, he provided a course that was an escape from the traditional academia and thought process. Very artistic. He (and his incredible TAs -- thank you Tarushi) encourage dialogue and deep, philosophical thinking above all. They are not as much concerned about competitive grades. The course material spanned across a multitude of genres, mediums, and countries. Take this class if you have the space for it. It was incredibly interesting and I have applied the works we saw to other areas of my major.
