want to waste your money on a class? take this one. the syllabus is less than a suggestion, the instructor is constantly late, doesn’t grade work until the end of the year, and does not follow any of the guidelines on the syllabus. most of the class was taught by students who give presentations each week based on the readings. good luck emailing the prof if you need help, she does not reply! the class is easy if you do the reflections, you can get an A. i can’t ever say you should take the class if you’re interested in the topic because the readings stop about halfway through the semester and the prof just copy and pasted quotes from the readings onto a power point. there is literally no lecturing. I really wish I could get my money back, could’ve learned everything in the course in 3 weeks and the professor is no help what so ever.
This is a great class! I learned so much about the origins of AAEV, the rhetoric, and the societal uses and contexts. We had great discussions, and our voices mattered. Prof Chic is awesome and really cares about her students. The final project was on a form of media that uses AAEV and it was extremely compelling to consider the way the language is used and to analyze it in a way that I commonly wouldn't. There are weekly reflections due on the readings from that week, but if you do the readings it's actually an easy write especially if you are able to draw your own experiences or societal connections to the main points from the articles. By the end of the course, you leave with more interest in the topic. I'm so glad that Prof Chic has brought this course to UVA, it was a great addition to my spring semester!
