GREE 1010

This is not an introductory language class for everyone. I don't want to exclude people; I'm just want to be realistic. Andrej's style and the pace of information in this class put it solidly in the category of "courses with hidden prerequisites." If you don't have at least a year of Latin (or some other heavily inflected language) and maybe some exposure to Greek letters going into this course, it is going to be a struggle, as you will have to rapidly learn grammatical concepts (Andrej didn't explain what a participle was until someone asked him) and memorize inflectional paradigms while also dealing with an unfamiliar alphabet and a constant influx of vocabulary. I know people made it work -- shoutouts to them (at least one was in both GREE 1010 and LATI 1010 simultaneously) -- but I felt that I was advantaged tremendously by already knowing the Greek alphabet, having 7+ years of Latin experience, and concurrently taking a linguistics course.

Don't get me wrong, Greek is a rewarding language, and Andrej is a brilliant and passionate man with an active and "classical" teaching style. Overall, I quite liked this class and look forward to another semester of it in GREE 1020. I would just be aware that this is not a commitment one should make lightly (especially since it meets 5 days a week!).

Greek 1010 is easily one of the best at UVA, and Andrej is one of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable professors out there! While there is much work, Andrej pushes all of the students in the class to do well and the results are instantaneous. Sections help solidify any confusion in the lecture and Andrej and the TAs are very available to help with any confusion or even simply chat! The classes are not simply lectures for 50 minutes; rather, they are engaging, containing back-and-forth activities. To help with the content, Andrej also gives dozens of mnemonics that help instantaneously. I never enjoyed nor knew I could enjoy so much learning a language to the extent I did with Andrej.
