This class is an easy A. It's interesting and Professor Morimoto is great. She's fun and understanding and is lenient about deadlines and extensions; you just have to let her know. I didn't do any of the readings and still ended with an A+ in the class. The work is very basic and manageable and spaced out, so you don't really have much to do except for every few weeks when there's an assignment due. I was never stressed about this class, and the assignments are actually enjoyable.
Professor Morimoto is one of the best professors I met at UVA. She is expert at media fandom studies. The course is interesting, inspiring and insightful. The theory-based readings are a little difficult, but she clarifies the readings in class and helps you grasp the important points. Assignments of the course are easy but can help you taste what fandom study is and equips you with the necessary skills to conduct further research. This is the second course I took with Professor Morimoto. Honestly, I took the course at the beginning not totally for the course per se but because that I know Professor Morimoto can teach her students a lot. The fact is that I made the correct choice again to take courses instructed by Professor Morimoto. She helps and cares students a lot. She can remember your research interests and help you develop your research skills. I learned a lot from her course and have been inspiring by her ideas and courses. I highly recommend you take any courses instructed by Morimoto and you would never regret making this decision.
professor morimoto is so sweet and really passionate about fan studies. i wanted to like this class and at times i did, but also about half way through the semester it got hard to sit through. i wasn't always sure what i was supposed to take away from a lecture as they were sort of independent of the work for the class. the grade was from a handful of assignments throughout the semester, including a final research paper. it was hard to know what my grade was for most of the term because professor morimoto took a while to grade, but she grades relatively easy if you follow the formatting guidelines and did the assignment. part way through the semester she mentioned that no one had below an A- or something like that.
it was an interesting topic to fulfill the MDST research requirement and was not too taxing, but only take it if you care about fandom.
