This is one of those classes where you get what you put into it. This class is once a week for two hours, and it's all discussion in class. You talk about nurses that have been lost in history, nursing stereotypes, and some ethics. There are reading assignments for every class but I rarely did them because I found a lot of them somewhat boring and I was still able to participate in class without having done the reading. It is more enjoyable if you participate, but I was never drawn to any of the topics we discussed. I have some friends who really enjoyed this class because they liked to discuss ethical dilemmas and such, but I personally am not very interested in those topics. The only grades you get are based on essays and participation. There are two short essays and two long essays, along with a final essay. None of the essays are more than 5 pages, though, which is nice. Hurst is a stickler about scholarly sources and APA formatting, so make sure all of the sources are scholarly (per-reviewed) otherwise you will get points off your essay grade. I finished with an A-, and just about everyone had an A- or A.
