This course was honestly so enjoyable and I highly recommend for any pre-med, public health, or public policy students. Dr. Powers teaches this class as a seminar and there's only about 30 kids in it normally. He gives lectures about the history and drawbacks of healthcare in the U.S., but interlaces them with the most fascinating and engaging stories from his extensive history in medicine as an ER surgeon and palliative care specialist. Dr. Powers is incredibly knowledge about American Healthcare and imparts every student with knowledge and wisdom that they would not get in traditional premed or public health classes. He's also pretty laid back and fun. There are 3 writing assignments throughout the year that aren't bad at all- most are 3-4 pages and he grades with leniency. The final paper is an 8-10 page paper but he gives you the opportunity to be creative and make it fun. Overall, I highly highly recommend this class.
#tCFF23 Dr. Powers is a really engaging lecturer, and since the class was structured as a seminar, it was mainly him talking about healthcare issues and students asking questions in between. The three writing assignments were pretty easy to do (2-4 pages each) but the grading is really strange because everything is graded out of three points (and it's not an easy 3/3), including the final assignment. This definitely led to some confusion as to how we are being graded. That aside, this class was pretty fun and a really interesting Batten elective.
