I really enjoyed my time with Professor Flood. He is caring, straightforward, and super approachable. The class combines his anthropology background with useful skills for the job market. You get plenty of time for workshops on resumes, interviewing, etc. Outside of class there's typically a short article or two (but not stuffy academic articles) and and a short writing assignment (300-500 words) to help you think critically about what you learned. The grading scale looks harsh, but he's a fair grader as long as you follow his directions and are actually trying. And attendance and participation are half of your overall grade. Putting in a little attention to detail, effort, and participation aren't hard to do and you're learning really useful information. Professor Flood really cares about his students and he wants to see that you're putting in the same amount of care into your work. A great class for my last semester because it was practical and enjoyable!
Professor Flood is an effective communicator and an overall great guy; you can tell he cares deeply about his students. The course content is extremely applicable to both college life and post-graduation life. You do a lot of mini projects regarding career paths, cost of living, graduate programs, etc., and so it's definitely worth the time. I will say the class was a little more difficult than anticipated, mostly because the concepts you're learning are brand new to the average 3rd or 4th year. Nevertheless, pulling out a B is very doable, and as a Liberal Arts major, it's extremely helpful to explore potential paths you can pursue if you're worried about your chosen major; Flood helps you realize that just because you're a Philosophy, Spanish, or History major, there's still a variety of options out there for you.
The class was fine. some practical skills but nothing you couldn't learn from just googling adult life tips or tips for recent grads. Professor Flood is a really cool guy, is very approachable, and clearly cares a lot about his students. However, the grading for this class is ridiculous. I would spend hours and hours on his assignments and I could never reach above a 3 out of 5 on his weekly assignments due before class on collab. It was really discouraging how much effort I put into these sometimes pointless assignments only go receive an 85 on his grading scale.
This class is such a hidden gem and I recommend that everyone takes it! The class meets once a week for 2.5 hours which definitely drag by, but he does give a break halfway through and there's plenty of group work to break it up. Each week, you have one short writing assignment and there's a few short readings. Here's the deal: if you want to get an A, according to Professor Flood, you need to read the readings and connect them to your writing assignments. If you just do the basic assignment, you get a B/B+ so a little extra work goes a long way. Participation is 25%, Attendance is 25%, and the 12 assignments are 50%. No exams, no final, no papers. The actual content of the course is incredibly useful and applicable to current and post-college life because Flood works closely with the career center. Hang in there in the first few weeks that are just theoretical, and then the rest of the semester will cover topics like interviewing, resumes, graduate school, adulting, corporate careers, and public sector/non-profit careers. At most, you'll spend 1-2 hours outside of class each week and 2.5 hours in class each week so this is very low commitment as well as incredibly useful. Please take this class!!!!!!!!
