Any course taught by Taylor Schey is going to be the highlight of your semester. He cares deeply about the content and goes out of his way to make a flexible syllabus that accommodates students' needs. Each week, we'd be expected to read usually 1-3 poems before class and submit a hand-written journal entry on a topic we found interesting in the readings. While you had the option to submit one every week, you only needed to submit 8 for full credit (or 9 if you wanted a 3% extra credit bump). We had one midterm and a creative project, and Schey purposely timed our project presentations during an intense period of the semester, essentially giving us that week off -- no readings, no assignments. Our final paper was completely open, but Schey encouraged us to pitch non-essay ideas to him so he could gauge whether it'd be feasible in the time frame. He also extended the deadline by two days to give us a little extra breathing room during exams.
If you have the chance to take a class with Taylor Schey, I really wouldn't pass it up. You won't be disappointed.
