ENGL 3001 was an okay experience for me. I think it covers a little too many different writers and texts, and would benefit from being more focused. Professor Rush is good, if not a little boring, but she knows her stuff and is very clear in lecture. I had Spencer Grayson as my TA and they were amazing and made discussions interesting and stress-free. Overall not too hard of a class just some writing assignments and you have to study a lot for the midterm and final to do well. tCFfall25
professor rush is clearly incredibly knowledgeable about the material, and also very passionate about several of the readings (esp paradise lost). however, i found that her script reading lecture format to be kinda uninteresting and incredibly dull--i understand that it is probably impossible to have properly organized lectures that explain as much information as possible in 50 minutes without a script, but professor rush basically just reads off her paper and her slides (which were part of the reading we already read..) also, for a "close reading class" i essentially wrote a total of one (1) 500 word essay for this class, and that was literally it. our other assignments involved just memorizing the general prologue and four sonnets, which you could've alternatively chosen to write an essay for, but i found that grading wildly depended on your t.a and wasn't willing to risk that when i could get a guaranteed A. the midterm and final were literally just seeing how well you could memorize her slides as well. although i was kinda harsh in this review, i do want to emphasize how knowledgeable and kind professor rush is, and if you try your best not to doze off in class, you truly will learn a lot about literature that very often makes no sense at first reading.
