tl;dr a lot of reading but an awesome class overall, good historical perspectives class if you need it
Bruce Holsinger is the best part of this class. He makes the readings bearable and understandable, regardless of how obtuse they are initially. I was lucky enough to get a good TA (Jack Bradford) but I haven't heard any egregious things from the other TA's, so you should be fine regardless of who you get.
The readings themselves are easy and most of them are provided to you for free. The rest are provided through the UVA Bookstore service, but you can easily find them elsewhere with little difference. The two essays were a lot, so start early enough and pace yourself. The exams were open book (not open note), so as long as you go to lectures and pay attention you should be fine. Parts of the exam were passage identification, but they will always be passages from the slides so if you study them you will be fine.

#tCFF23 Professor Holsinger made this class so enjoyable! At first, I was nervous to study medieval literature, but in lectures he made the readings so accessible. You can tell he is passionate and knows a lot about the topics in this class. In the class, you have to read a lot, submit a midterm & final paper, and take two tests. All the work is doable, but I would definitely recommend not skipping lectures because they help you understand the text and formulate your own arguments for the papers.
The professor was very engaging due to his unique lecture style. He had some good surprises and twist and turns. There's a LOT of reading. You don't have to do all of it, but depending on your TA this could be a poor choice. Most of the readings were good classics, there's a lot of Christianity stuff in the class but I guess that's just the nature of early English literature. I took this class because I needed to for APPW, but some people I knew took it for fun. I'm not sure why they would do that. It's not a bad course, but it's also not super fun. You can do a creative assignment for a essay which I enjoyed. #tCFF23
