Shand is a Ph.D. student who was teaching for the first time this semester (Fall 2022). It was super clear that he knew a ton about the course material and wanted to help students learn and succeed. That being said, he was still figuring out how to teach, and there were problems with bugs in the labs, writing fair exams, and his public speaking confidence.
The lectures were almost always interesting and covered the basics of both offensive and defensives cyber security. There were 7 labs through the semester which were pretty fun and manageable. They usually would take the form of following a tutorial to learn about a new tool and then completing a challenge problem or two. Shand was super available on Discord to answer questions. There were also two programming assignments in Python, the first was a lot of work but the second one was more reasonable. The midterm was take home and open for a week, the final was 3 hours. Shand was still calibrating how to write and exam but I thought they were ok. I know Orebaugh is considered the best for this course, but I'd say you're still going to have a good semester with Shand. #tCFfall2022
