Although some other reviews were calling some portions of the drawing course boring, I found it rather fun! Despite doing things I had done in 6th grade, it was fun to do them again with my current proficiency in art, and challenging myself within the assignments. Something that's a given for all college art professors is that they are often very biased in what pieces they like and dislike, and often grade according to their preferences. But as long as you talk your ideas out with Professor Chan and listen to her suggestions, she's quite fair in grading and nice in giving constructive criticism.
She teaches well, but if you know art basics this class will be a bit boring. She grades based off of effort so don't be worried if you don't know how to draw. It is really hard to get higher than a 93, I only know one guy in class who got one. Overall it is a good class that teaches/reinforces art basics.
It was a pretty ok class, enjoyable for some parts and boring for others. From what I've heard, Amy is definitely one of the better teachers for this class. She does a couple of demos and gives us plenty of examples to go off of. You can usually tell whether or not she'll give you a good grade by her critique though- you can usually tell which pieces she likes and doesn't like.
The drawing unit is easy if you have drawing experience. Sometimes it was boring, but for the most part, you were able to find ways to challenge yourself. The conceptual unit was pretty interesting, especially if the medium used was different than I'm used to. The digital unit... made me realize I didn't like photo editing or cinematography.
Loved this class! Amy felt really encouraging at the beginning with drawing skills and was really understanding that all of us were coming from different backgrounds and levels. As time went on, she pressured kids to try a bit harder on the conceptual assignments, but make sure to talk to her about your ideas in detail before trying them out. Most of the class was able to earn a 93 on the projects, but as long as you have a good concept behind them, then they will definitely do well. Not a hard class at all, would absolutely recommend it to anyone wishing to try out their skills in art. Made me a lot more excited to draw in my free time and try my best with some art pieces.
Definitely not my favorite class but if you want to pursue a studio art major, it's required. The class is split into three sections: drawing, conceptual, and digital. If you are proficient in any type of drawing, the drawing portion is extremely boring and repetitive in my opinion. Especially in this section, there wasn't a lot of room for creativity; you essentially just draw a bunch of random objects for five weeks. I thought the conceptual and digital portions were a little more interesting but still were sometimes a drag for anyone with art experience. As far as the professor goes, I often thought that Prof Chan was dismissive during critique. I'm a firm believer in constructive criticism, but sometimes it seemed like she only liked students' art with a style that aligned with her tastes. On a positive note, the workload was always manageable with homework only assigned on Wednesdays and generally due Mondays.
