I took this course in my first semester and I went into it with prior art experience. It was definitely a time-consuming class, but since I enjoyed art and the rest of my course workload was lighter it was manageable. There were 10 assignments worth 80% of your grade and participation was worth 20% (commenting on art during lecture, participating in critiques). Each unit was a different medium so there wasn't much freedom in that aspect. For the last assignment we were able to work in groups, and there were also a few extra credit opportunities at the end of the semester. For each unit there would be some classes with lecture/practice with the medium (usually a bit boring and slow) and others with just work time. You'll likely always need to dedicate multiple hours outside of class time to work on your projects. After each unit ended, we would do class critiques of everyone's artwork. Critiques could also be kinda slow, especially if participation is low. Professor Hogg gave good feedback on Canvas on her own. Overall I found this class to be a nice change of environment/work from my other classes, but it is kinda intense for an intro class, so I probably wouldn't recommend this to anyone who isn't that into art or has a busy schedule.
If you're taking studio art do not take it with professor hogg. Not only did she give weekly assignments that took hours to complete but she also was extremely rude about critiquing your work in front of the class. One of our "weekly assignments" was a 150-frame hand-drawn animation that took everyone at least 8 hours minimum to complete. What makes it so unfair is that none of the other studio art professors gave this many assignments (I remember asking someone who took studio art a previous semester who they interviewed for their midterm and they said they only had to write hypothetical interview questions.) The weirdest part is our weekly assignments are worth 22% of our grade and our final is worth 50% of our grade. What made no sense was that our midterm (worth 28%) involved a full interview with a contemporary artist, a full presentation, and creating an artwork, while out final (worth 50%) was just creating an artwork. She also would approve your proposal for an idea and then criticize it when you turned it in. I know multiple people who would just not read her comments on their work because they were so frustrating. Even if you spent hours on an assignment, she would grade it subjectively or point out how it was drawn "out of proportion," basically grading everything based on technical skill even though this is an introduction to studio art class. Her assignments were also so confusing and random for example the video haiku assignment (don't ask) and the circulations assignment. She would also spend over an hour of class time "lecturing" which involved projecting images of artwork and just verbally describing them while we listened. I went into this class feeling so hopeful because I genuinely like art, but this class singlehandedly destroyed all of my enjoyment for art. Overall horrible experience.
