Overall, really interesting class. Also a pretty easy A. KvD is a GREAT lecturer, his lectures are easy and engaging to listen to and they seem more story-like than anything else. The readings are typically very thought-provoking but some weeks he assigns A LOT. The trick is to learn how to skim the readings when they begin to pile up. Most weeks, the homework only consists of the readings and "3 substantial paragraphs" analyzing the readings (time spent on this will vary depending on how fast of a writer you are. THERE IS A LOT OF GROUP WORK IN THIS CLASS. If you get a good group, yay, but if you don't talk to him early on about what to do. One of the best parts of this class was that there were no midterms or final.
Super easy class. Your grade only comes from weekly reading analysis (about one page double spaced) and a big group project you work on throughout the semester (which you could probably do the entirety of in like four hours). Readings are interesting and usually not too long, especially for a course like this. Also you barely have to pay attention to the lectures, you're supposed to reference them in your analysis but you're never tested on the information.
I thought this class, in the end, was enjoyable to take. It is obvious that Kirt von Daacke is very passionate about the work that UVA has done to try and make amends for their past. I must say if you do not like group work this class is NOT FOR YOU. This semester there were approximately 8 individual assignments and 8 group assignments. Thankfully my group was hardworking, so our grades ended up being pretty good, but I could see this class being torture if you are placed in a bad group. He assigns a decent bit of class material, but the class is largely asynchronous so you can do it at your own pace, if at all.
