This class was amazing and I 100% recommend anyone to take it with Professor Greenland, especially if you do not have a big background/interest in Sociology. The material covered in class ranged from critiques of mass media, reality tv, tinder, modelling, and modern music. Although some of it was academical jargon, the majority was really interesting and relatable. Professor Greenland also really worked with us, was very supportive and encouraging, and listened to feedback.
There were reading before each class, but the large majority were easily skimmed and most were actually pretty interesting (a few you had to just struggle through, but less as the semester went on). Even if you read them pretty closely, I would say MAX an hour outside of class in an average week. Based on our feedback she changed the grading a little bit, but our grade came from 2 multiple choice quizzes that were very easy, 2 exams that were short essay format, and participation. As long as you did the readings (even skimming), everything was very manageable because it was open note and you were given plenty of time. It was cumulative in the sense that a lot of what we learned built upon itself or was related, but you got to choose between pretty broad prompts for the exams and just had to reference readings. Also, we were given two opportunities for extra credit by doing discussion boards both were pretty easy. There was no final which was nice.
Class was a mix of small group discussion and short lectures. Class did get cancelled a couple of times, but it never created extra work for us. Discussion sections were kind of a waste of time (I think Julia Stein was the only TA when I took it) as they were review of the readings.
