I absolutely LOVED this class. I was nervous because there was little to no information online about Professor Sweeney but I'm so glad I decided to take it. The actual course material was so interesting and she makes the class so enjoyable. I wish I could take this class again that's how much I loved it. Professor Sweeney is an interesting woman but that just adds to the overall class. She's not a harsh grader at all (wrote my first paper the night before and did well) and there are so many opportunities for extra credit. I could not recommend this class enough. TAKE IT!
Really enjoyed this class, the topic was Human Rights in Latin America this semester. We learned about the histories of countries such as Cuba, Argentina, Guatemala, Haiti and topics such as Mexican street children, neoliberal policies, truth commissions, asylum, etc. Definitely manageable for a 3000 level course, with two 6-7 page papers, four weekly writing responses, and participation which add up to 300 points. She's pretty lenient grader with the papers. Plus there's a ton of opportunities for extra credit where you could go to as many human rights-related events/talks as you wanted and receive 10/10 for each write-up you submit. Sweeney is extremely knowledgable about the topic and I learned a lot.
Take this class! Professor Sweeney is really interesting and an easy grader. The course is four 2-page reading responses and two 7 page papers: really manageable for a 3000 level history class. The course is structured into different case studies of Latin American countries each week and I learned so much.
