This is a great class and Professor Horn has a lot of experience in the field and is very passionate about abnormal psych. She doesn't give homework other than reading and some videos to watch, but the class is only graded on three tests and a final. I wouldn't take this class if tests aren't your thing. Otherwise it is a very interesting subject.
I took abnormal because that field of psychology is what I'm most passionate about, so I was more motivated than the average person in the class. That being said, the class sucked. Professor Horn made exams ridiculously hard. You have to diagnose patients based on a 2 minute video and it's like 50% select all that apply (with no partial credit) so even if you can name the symptoms of a certain disorder, if you add one or forget one you get no credit. The transition to online was an absolute nightmare. Class is normally a 1 hour and 15 minutes, but the online lectures were usually anywhere from 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2.5 hours. She just said that we could put her on 1.5 speed and be fine. While most professors gave a larger window to go in and take exams, she still made us take it within the class window. This caused about half the class to be kicked out in both midterms that were online. The last midterm was on the last day of class and about half the class got kicked out and a large portion of them lost all their answers. We didn't get a resolution to that until late the next day (well past the deadline to decide grading option) and were told that everyone would have to go back in and submit the exam again, with some students having to retake the whole thing. I lost all my answers and so it was such a delight and pleasure to retake an entire midterm in the middle of finals. I understand that it is hard to teach online, especially when you are a new teacher, but this class was just ridiculous.
Do NOT take this class with professor horn. I enrolled thinking it would be fun because Abnormal Psych seems interesting but Professor Horn has sucked the life and joy out of this class. She does not know how to lecture and her exams are awful. so many questions that say "check all that apply" and you only get credit if you check exactly the right ones. the final is cumilative and insanely long. Also she made her online lectures go way over the allotted 1hr 15 minutes of class consistently. even if you think this class seems interesting please take it with someone else
whatever you do please do yourself a favor and DO NOT take this class with Erin Horn. She is a knowledgeable person but she is a bad and inexperienced teacher. Her lectures are just her reading off the powerpoint slides and her tests are extremely long and somewhat unfair. Literally every professor I had tried their best to work with students and make the whole learning process during the covid-19 pandemic easier for students but Erin Horn is the most inflexible professor I have ever had. Her final is also absurdly long and she does not care if her students actually learn something, she just wants you to memorize her lectures word by word. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!
I really enjoyed this class but the exams were not easy at all and it's very test heavy. 3 midterms worth 30% each, the lowest is dropped, and a final worth 40%. The way she grades, the highest score on the exam is 100 and it scales down from there. The mean grade would always be an 80. There were 6 extra credit assignments and you had to do all of them to boost your grade a step ( A to an A+ etc). The extra credit had to be the equivalent of a b to get a checkmark. I don't think she's a bad teacher but she was a bit inflexible during quarantine (making us take our exams at the same time, leading to collab crashing, etc). She was good to email or talk to outside of class. It was easy to miss out on points because there was no partial credit and some of the wording was tricky. Overall, I learned a lot and I liked the class but not an easy a at all.
DO NOT take this class with Erin Horn. I love this field and had heard good things about the class (not the prof), but it was absolutely horrible. The tests were totally unfair and she expects students to remember the tiniest details from the textbook. The class solely consisted of her reading off the PowerPoints and the only grades were 3 midterms (one dropped) worth 60% and a crazy long final worth 40%. She did not adjust anything for Coronavirus and there were so many problems with the most recent exam that most of the class had to redo much of it. Do not waste your time with this and take with another professor if possible.
DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS CLASS WITH PROFESSOR HORN!
I thought this would be an interesting Psych course to take (I have taken other Psych courses) but this was absolutely the WORST class ever to take in my college life.
She does not give you any homework assignments but don't be fooled by that. You are given 3 exams and 1 final which are INSANELY LOOOOOONGGGG.
It is almost impossible to finish within time limit unless you memorize the powerpoints that are about 30-50 pages (some are even longer) long for each chapter literally word by word. What's even worse is that most of the questions are "SELECT ALL THAT APPLY" and you don't get any partial credit if you don't check all the right ones plus there are video questions which you have to watch one or two 5min videos to answer the questions. I am extremely frustrated about how inflexible given the situation. I don't think this class should be a 2000-level course unless she makes some major changes to it.
PLEASE DO NOT EVER CONSIDER TAKING THIS CLASS WITH PROFESSOR ERIN HORN!!!!
This class was literally a nightmare. I seriously regret not dropping this class after taking the first exam. You only get 75mins to complete about 70 questions and half of them are "Select All that Apply" which you don't get any credit unless you get all the correct ones. You also get video questions (you have to watch 5min video and that is deducted from the time given) and some short answer questions. Her exams were absolutely unfair and extremely long. This is very frustrating because your grade solely depends on 2 midterms (30% each; you take 3 exams but the lowest 1 gets dropped) and 1 final (40%). You are tested on 6 chapters for each test and that gives you about 350-400 powerpoint slides to memorize. Transition to online made this class even worse. She gave 2.5hr lectures which is just her reading off of the powerpoint slides several times. If you want to ruin someone's life, then let them take this class with her.
She might be very passionate about the subject, but I do not think that she did a great job as a teacher. Do not take this class and waste your time and money.
For such a cool topic Horn's lectures were super dry, with her reading off the slides. To add insult to injury her tests were very long and unfair with many questions that require subjective judgement that you would be better off writing an essay on. The curve in the class is absurd, especially moving online, where the top performer sets the bench mark, meaning the curve could be blown by one diligent cheater. The icing on the cake is that the grading scale needs a 95% for an A in the class. This is by far the worst experience I have ever had in a class at UVA, and I hope by the time Horn teaches more semesters she will learn to be a more reasonable professor.
This class was took up a lot of my time, but it was so worth it imo. If you aren't a psyc major or extremely interested in abnormal psyc I would not recommend taking this class. The tests are very detailed and challenging, but I learned so much when studying for them. This class taught me a lot. Dr Horn is a practicing psychiatrist, so she really knows what she is talking about. I would recommend talking with her during office hours — she is easy to connect with, and you can go over your tests in extreme detail with her. If you're looking for an intensive detailed class about abnormal psyc, take this! If you don't want to work hard for your grade or you want an easy A, do not take this.
