The class was good. She gives you a lot of work in the very beginning of the class and then there are really no assignments after that besides watching a sports game, the final project, and one 5-7 page essay. The real work is the final project and the volunteering for UVA Sports working games. The class requires a lot of the time in the end of the semester between working on your project (which takes several hours of filming and editting) and working the 2 sports games, which are each 4-7 hour shifts. These shifts are very interesting - you are hands on working a sports game on the filming side, so you can be doing graphics or replay.
The overall class experience was really good but honestly I wouldn't recommend the class to anyone that isn't intending to go into Sports Media (I'm not and because of that it was all just less relevant and kind of felt like a waste of time). Lots of cool speakers come into the class too which is really fun. In class you just have fun discussions and watching relevant sports production clips and stuff.
Professor Clay is really nice and has lots of cool experiences to talk about, references to give, relationships to connect you to. Again - super helpful if you want to go into this topic. But she also grades pretty rough on class participation.
LOVED this class! So cool and fun; I definitely recommend, especially if you want to get into sports media. Anna Clay was awesome and we met a lot of other people that could be good for networking. You have to go to class, but it's interesting and I got close with all of my classmates because the class was so small. It was relatively stress-free with a few minor assignments that could be a little time consuming (watching sports games/features and comparing them/taking notes). The final project was the most stressful because you do a 2-person feature on a sports story at UVA. It was great to gain a lot of experience on editing, filming, interviewing, etc. It was time consuming at the end (13 hours of editing in Clem lab), but it was a great experience. We also had to volunteer at JPJ or games for graphics, camera, and replay (you choose 2). Replay was super fun, and I didn't do camera but it seemed fun (especially for basketball games because you're on the court). The only downside was sometimes having to go to JPJ for class (I was a first year and didn't have a car, so it was a good 20 minute walk there and some people would have to rush to their next class after). Overall, loved this class. Only take this class if interested in media studies and/or sports media and if you are willing to put in the time/effort when it comes to it.
