Mamadou is an amazing professor and I highly recommend taking Intro to Filmmaking with him. Classes were mostly group discussions about film, class projects, or individual work. He does not grade harshly, but he offers thoughtful critique and insight on how to improve. He also gives a lot of positive reinforcement on your work, which makes class easy to look forward to. There is a lot of group work in this class, but he keeps track of everyone's individual contributions, and you get to rotate group roles often. There is so much opportunity to learn technical skills in this class because it covers A LOT of the filmmaking process. If you are not participating in group discussions, he will call you out, but as long you have an interest in film it won't be hard to contribute. Mamadou really fostered a creative environment that strengthened my love for film/production. I would take this class over 1,000,000 times if I could!
This class made me realize that I am not interested in the film industry. However, Prof. Dia is a nice guy and my peers seemed to enjoy the class more than I did. I did not particularly like how he did not publish any grades or give us feedback until the final draft of our script had to be submitted. The class is not too difficult and it is a great way to get hands on filmmaking experience if that's what you're looking for.
