HIUS 2003

KvD is the coolest professor I've ever had. He's so knowledgable and knows how to relate well with his students. That said, he is not an easy grader by any means. He does make up for his harsh grading though by offering quite a bit of extra credit. The class itself, in my opinion, should be a required course for all U.Va students. The history you learn about the people who truly built the University of Virginia is heartbreaking but also very insightful. The material you learn in the course can't be found in textbooks but is very relevant to learn about given the times we live in today. I walked out of this class with a completely different view about the early days of U.Va and now better understand that racism and the effects of slavery are still very prominent within the United States today.

I highly recommend this class. Kirt von Daacke is a great and very knowledgeable teacher. The class also consists of a lot of guests lecturers, so you will get the chance to hear from various archaeologists, architects, historians, etc. that are studying slavery at UVA. There's 4 essays in this class, all of which are actually on interesting topics. There was also a very doable midterm. The professor was really good about giving bonus points, and an A was very achievable in this class.
I really think this is a necessary course, and if you're considering taking it, you definitely should. You will leave with such a better understanding of UVA's history and slavery, and getting the chance to learn about it from one of the top historians researching slavery at UVA currently is a great opportunity.

This was an interesting and engaging course. It consisted of 4 papers and one midterm exam. The material of the class is good info to have and the papers/midterm are not too difficult if you take notes during class. I recommend this class to anyone.
