He is a really nice guy and means well but this class was the absolute most. We had at least two hours of mandatory group meetings outside of class, and at the end of the semester when we were building our final project, we spent upwards of 8 hours a week outside of class and those meetings. You do learn some valuable lessons about group work and the design process but it's nothing that you couldn't have learned just as well in another class. He does make you purchase his textbook at about $60 and he'll quiz you on extremely specific details from the first three chapters for the first few weeks and then you'll never touch the book again. The book itself is unnecessary because it pretty much repeats the same ideas that design is a circular process but over the course of like 200 pages. It's remarkable how the same information was converted into a thousand different info graphics. You can get an A, but it won't be fun.
This class is definitely worth taking with Professor Bailey. At first, I was upset about how much more work he gave us than the other Intro to Engineering professors. We had to meet with our groups constantly over the course of the semester, and put a ton of effort into our final projects. Having to buy and read the textbook at the beginning of the semester was definitely annoying, but the quizzes we were given on the readings were not graded. The way this class differs from the other ENGR 1624 classes is that you work on one project for the entire semester rather than many small projects. Professor Bailey is an extremely passionate, fun, and knowledgeable guy who puts everything he possibly can into this class. He makes an effort of getting to know each and every student and he always encourages students to talk to him and go to his office hours. This class is entirely about mastering the design progress and learning what it is like to be an engineer. After completing the class, I felt like I really got something out of it. Professor Bailey goes out of his way to show his students how they can make a difference to those around them through engineering projects, which is not something any other class got to experience firsthand like we did. I'd highly recommend taking this class with Professor Bailey, the outside work is composed 95% of group work which becomes very enjoyable, and the class is extremely rewarding.
