This class gave me a better idea of what I want to do in the E-School, but required the skills and time commitment of a senior capstone project. The premise of Prof Agnew's version of the class was to focus on a large project that would occupy the entire semester. We were expected to come in with specialized engineering skills like coding, circuit building, and mechanics, or else learn it very quickly. It all seemed too much for an intro engineering course, especially for students who didn't take engineering classes in high school. However, being thrown into a topic that I knew little about did teach me engineering design principles and how to work in a group. It also gave me first-hand knowledge into the various engineering fields. However, the project was stressful. And, much of the class time was used for lectures that had little to do with our actual project, which made the project timeline even more stressful.
The class was split into self-constructed groups for the majority of the semester. Groups would each take on aspects of the project. The majority of grades were group reports written by each team. There was no textbook required for the course.
For anybody enrolled in ENGR 1624 LAB, I would highly suggest going to office hours. The TA's are helpful and it is a nice place to knock out your lab assignment, even if you never ask the TAs questions.
This class, combined with the lab section of the course (MATLAB), consumed much of my time first semester. Prof Agnew will present you with a challenging and difficult task but it was rewarding in the end to see the project come together.
