The professor of this class (Elisabeth Pleszkoch) is probably one of my favorite at UVA. She is so kind and funny and really cares about her students, and even does kahoots with prizes for the winners which warms my heart. Now for the content of the course- I found the information pretty interesting as a Biology major, but the way in which it was presented was a little dull. The classes consist of mostly going over a powerpoint presentation with the occasional video to watch. Another note- this class is not exactly an "easy A". The homework assignments (there's 4 total) are quite doable, but not without reading the resources she recommends at the beginning of the course. Along with those there is one group project, and no final which is really nice during finals season. Overall, I would recommend this course if you're interested in pharmacology and the effects of different drugs on the human body.
As a health major, I found this class super interesting and fun! In my opinion, the class was on the easy side and the professor is very fair and nice. The only assignments given were reading quizzes that are open book. The questions from the quizzes were also very helpful for studying for the tests. The only exams we had were a midterm and a final that were also pretty straightforward if you study the quiz questions and classroom PowerPoint lectures (that are posted on Canvas!). I highly recommend if you are looking for a less stressful elective!
Not sure where these low ratings are coming from, Dr. P. is one of my favorite professors at UVA by far, and this class is one of the most interesting classes you can take at UVA in my opinion. Not to mention it is SUPER easy and low commitment. The quizzes were not that hard or confusing, and they were open book as well. Lectures pretty much follow the powerpoints word for word (which you can find posted on Canvas) but I always showed up to lecture just because Dr. P. was an awesome person. Overall I highly recommend this class for a broad and informative review of all kinds of drugs.
I highly do not recommend taking this class. Although the quizzes are online and take-home, they should not be taken as free A's. The professor recommends reading one of the books out of the two that she presented (Buzzed), however, most of the reading quizzes are from a mixture of both of the books. At times the wording of the questions in the quizzes are just so confusing that it would be almost impossible without guessing the answer choices and hoping for the best. She is lenient with attending lectures (as she allows you to miss certain amounts before it affects your attendance grade), but at times it doesn't even seem relevant to show up to lectures since they are pretty much a copy from the readings. The only thing that I would pay attention to are the videos shown (since she does ask questions about them on exams), in addition to her anecdotes (they were pretty interesting) Professor Pleszkoch did say that she loves to give out A's, however, it just seems at times that she makes the exams too difficult with the amount of information that she expects you to memorize. There are no curves for the class (one or two extra credit opportunities but don't take these for granted). Overall, it appeared that a majority of the students in this class was struggling with the materials and the exams.
