This class is awesome! I feel like the content illustrated a lot of issues with modern society that I knew were there but had never really heard them put into words... if that makes sense. Zigon is a great lecturer and I had a good time listening to his take on things. There's a lot of focus on interdependence of human beings and how we can build a better world. He plays a song in the beginning of each class and then talks about how it relates to lecture for that day, which is pretty fun. The quizzes are tough at times since they have such a small number of questions, but if you get the gist of the readings and try on the student lecture you'll finish with a grade you're happy with. My only complaint is that lecture was two hours long once a week, so if you don't have a fabulous attention span staying engaged is challenging.
#tCFspring2021. This course is so great, and honestly quite shocked that professor Zigon doesn't have any reviews. He is so sweet, kind, a bit awkward (but in the best way possible), and funny too! I thought this class was going to be very tough, but it was actually super straightforward. This class doesn't have any official homework per se, but there are weekly readings that you have to do (which can almost equate to reading a small book every week, so be prepared to make a little bit of a time commitment for this class).
The course consists of participation, a group project/student lecture presentation, and an on-going final exam where you're just asked specific questions about past classes and reading materials for the upcoming lecture. Professor Zigon has said himself that he wishes we didn't have to get graded and that we could just focus purely on learning, but with that in mind, he's a very forgiving and kind grader (for the student lecture). The student lecture itself sounds very intense and difficult, with pretty much almost everyone in my class being super nervous before they presented, but I'm pretty sure as long as you try, you will get a good grade. I signed up to get mine done super early in the semester, so I didn't have to worry about this big project falling onto me later in the semester when I had other projects and exams to do. Quizzes cannot be BS'd! You need to take good notes in class and you also need to get through the reading. I will say, some readings have been very hard to comprehend or understand because they're heavily rooted in theory, but if you just get the general gist of the reading, you should be good. I would recommend studying analyses websites of the readings prior to taking the quiz if you have issues trying to come up with the main ideas as well. As mentioned, Zigon himself is a great teacher, and I'd strongly recommend this class to anyone interested, whether you are an anthropology major, in the bioethics major, or just want to take a fun elective class. :)
