Class was interesting, but slightly boring. Teacher read straight from his notes that he posts online. Attendance, however, is mandatory. Teacher is nice and understanding and is lenient with extensions. DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS. Quizzes and essays pull straight from his notes. If you pay attention in class, and review his notes before quizzes, you will receive an A. Good class to take in order to fulfill non-western perspectives.
This class was alright. Cohen's lecture style is really dry, but he is a great great man that has a lot of cool experiences with, and passion for, India. The guest lecturers were phenomenal - there was a huge range of backgrounds and interesting lessons that came with each. Even though you need a 95% for an A, it is incredibly easy to get an A - he gave all of us 95s-99s on our papers. Attendance is mandatory. Take this for a GPA booster only if you are at least marginally interested in India.
This class was very interesting in my opinion. It is true that Prof. Cohen can be a little boring and off topic at times but at other times I thought this lectures were interesting. Secondly, I thought that all the guest lecturers were amazing!!! There were only 4 quizzes which were pretty easy because they are all from his lectures and he even puts the notes from class online. Going to class counted for your grade for participation! The final was kind of like a reflection paper and he graded it so leniently! I would recommend this course to everyone and yes, it was a little boring at times but still I am happy I took it :)
This class is an interesting class. Professor Cohen is an extremely knowledgable professor, and has studied and worked in India, so he knows what he is talking about. In terms of lectures, while some could be boring, there are many guest speakers during the course of the semester, which made for some very interesting and engaging discussion. It is pretty easy to get an A in the class as long as you show up and take the quizzes on Collab, which are every 4 weeks. The final was a 1000 word essay, and if you did decently, you could walk out with an A. If you want to know more about India, this is definitely a good course for you. Cohen is also super chill during his office hours.
I feel bad giving this class such a low rating, but this class was so horrible I dreaded going to it. I took this class to satisfy the Non-Western Perspective and I regret it very much. Mr. Cohen is like that super nice and cool grandpa that tells stories from his younger days, but the man doesn't know how to conduct a class. For starters, the syllabus wasn't even complete on the first day of class, and wasn't completed at a later date, so no one had any idea what was going on. Cohen read straight from his own notes...word for word. So incredibly boring. I never took notes in his class because he would be talking about something from the reading one minute and then be talking about something completely different the next, so I never knew what was important to write down and what wasn't. Attendance and participation was a good chunk of the grade which is nice. I'm expecting an A in this class but I would never take it again.
