Avoid at all costs. Her excuse for poor class performance was "epidemiology is a new language." This class was a disappointment. I often experienced existential crises while sitting through her boring 2.5 hour lectures, of which had nothing to do with the exam. No one opened the textbook, a waste of money. No one went to lecture, a waste of time. Spend your Mondays elsewhere!
Where to begin....This class was a very big disappointment and a horrible representation of UVA's public health department. Jean Eby is a nice person, but it's obvious that teaching isn't her priority. Her lectures are all over the place and it's clear she does not prep for lectures beforehand. In addition, she is terrible at responding to emails and doesn't attend her own office hours, making it very difficult to contact her. She also didn't show up for class two times this semester, when the class is only scheduled once a week, again emphasizing how much she cares about teaching. Towards the end of the semester she decided to hold a few "special" office hours because many of my classmates and I complained that we wanted help from her. However, she was over 20 minutes late to her office hour and didn't bother to send an email or notify anyone that she was going to be late. There have also been many occasions when the TA would be on her phone for a majority of class or just leave early. In regards to the class material, I don't know why this class is called an "epidemiology class" because all we did this semester was statistics. In addition, a typical lecture class would consist of Professor Eby going over the assigned workbook questions, which made no sense because the answers are given in the workbook. Overall, it upsets me that the undergraduate public health department would make this class a major requirement because after leaving this class, I can confidently say that I did not learn a single thing.
This class is really bad. The professor does not reply to emails or show up to her own office hours. The first quiz was literally on one example we did in class and not on all the homework we did. You do not have to do the workbook ahead of class. She will go over the examples that you need to know for the "quizzes". Aka quizzes are exams because two are worth 20% of your grade and the final quiz is worth 40% of your grade. We literally just discuss the workbook in class and go over boring epi examples. You really do not get to do specific public health issues and mostly just go over generic formulas. It is not a good representation of the PHS department. Take the other class: 3130. As a GPH major I really looked forward to this class, but found it a major disappointment. Many people skip class or leave class right in the middle. The professor even didn't come to two of the classes and the classes are only once a week for 2.5 hours. The class is very disorganized in the fact that there is not set syllabus on what we will discuss in class makes it very frustrating.
