This class is mainly for Latin American History Majors (which I am not), but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Owensby is just a great professor all around and really tries to engage everyone, whether it be during office hours or during class. The class is very small (about 15 students total) and you really get to know one another. There is a TON of reading and it can be very overwhelming; essentially you are assigned one book a week which can be hard to handle with other classes. To be honest, some weeks I did not read all of the assigned readings/books because there just wasn't enough time so I would just keep a low profile during class that week. If you can't read that week's assigned work due to time constraints, you should at least read the SparkNotes or Wikipedia page on it and have some type of background. Also, each week a different professor comes in and teaches the class, while Owensby facilitates the class discussion. You're entire participation grade is based on two essays (6-8 pages & 8-10 pages) and participation. He understands not everyone has the same Latin History background so don't be nervous about speaking up during class and offering your opinions! All in all, I really recommend this class (just be ready for all the readings, ha)!
