This course will probably not be offered in future semesters, so this is primarily a critique of the instructor. The course purports to both examine maps and world history; however, it does neither well, only regurgitating a ton of useless minutiae - no deep connections. The instructor is endlessly boring; he only makes the most superficial, insipid observations. Discussion sections are a joke and consist of "look and describe these pretty pictures!" This instructor should be avoided. Take a more interesting history elective. At least the exams required as little thought as found in the lectures...
Review below is spot on, this class just sucks. Edelson will write "short reading" on the assignment sheet and it'll turn out to be 40 pages of an academic text. There are two short papers that are painful to write, and one long "atlas" research paper that is even MORE painful to write (8-10 pages). The midterm and final require a ridiculous amount of studying and the material is just not interesting at all (unless you love maps for some reason). Don't take
This class is TRASH. Honestly, truly sucks all around. The amount of reading is too high for a class like this, and I feel as though I learned absolutely nothing. Edelson makes no meaningful connections or lays out any important themes. His lectures largely make no sense and are essentially just theorizing as to what might actually have gone on. He doesn't know history, so it isn't a history class, but it is definitely supposed to be a history class? TA grading papers was RIDICULOUS. Grades made no sense, she would tell you to do one thing and then take off a ton of points for you doing the exact thing she told you to do. Overall, this class is for sure a no go, and honestly shouldn't even be offered anymore.
