I initially struggled with this class and its format. I did not enjoy how the exams were so long and demanding on students during the COVID pandemic. If Professor Liu taught this class in-person, the exams would not have been as demanding. My final exam ended up being 15 pages long and took me the maximum time allowed. At the beginning of the course, I received a "B-" on the midterm. However, by miraculous efforts and insanely hard work, I earned an "A-" on the five-page paper and an "A+" on the final, pulling off an "A-." It was extremely rewarding to have pulled off the grade, but the class was extremely demanding and graded similarly to the graduate class that Liu combined the undergrad section with. I would advise students to wait to take this class with Professor Liu in-person to maximize their experiences and to reduce the ridiculous length of the midterm and final exam.
This is an awesome class for anyone interested in American-Chinese relations. Professor Liu is one of the sweetest professors out there. He's very charming and friendly, and because he was born and raised in China, he offers a wonderful perspective and hilarious anecdotes about events that happened while he was there. In lecture, you gain both an American and Chinese perspective so the class feels very well-rounded. I am coming out the class with a much more informed perspective on American-Chinese relations. There is assigned reading but you don't have to do any of it. I only used my books to complete the study guide. There is a 10-page you have to write on one aspect of American-Chinese relations but it really isn't that much work. There was also a 2 page, single space paper on a book from a list he gave at the beginning of the semester. It was not hard to write and he is a very fair grader. He gives a really awesome study guide for the mid-term and final. He gives the essay questions and topic with the study guide and doesn't change anything when we have the actual exam. He's very transparent about what to expect on the exam and what his expectations are. Overall this class has very little work but you will learn so much.
