Really interesting course. It is much more of an architectural history and art history course rather than an urban planning course. Professor Sewell definitely aims to help all of her students and to make the material as easy to understand as possible. If you are new to architectural history, I would recommend taking this course. You don't really need to do the readings, but reading about the theories are helpful.
Professor Sewell is amazing. This class is cross listed in Urban-planning and is my first class in the A-school and got an A. The class goes through the history and urban landscape Istanbul, London, France, New York and Shanghai, she gives out vocab handouts for lecture units. It was a great overview of all the cities from the fall of the Byzantine Empire all the way to 2010s. Her lectures touch on urban planing, zoning, history, art/music, sociology. Very engaging, the readings added more depth of knowledge. I tried to skim all the readings and for lectures I didn't, I could absolutely still follow.
***Go to every class, skim the readings, and go to office hours just to know her! She is kind, helpful, and really personable. 10/10 recommend
***2 midterms (slide comparison & long answer), 1 final (double the midterm), 1 map comparison paper (5 pgs), and 1 research paper (8-10ogs).
